A tradition transported through the generations

Ever since Roy founded the company back in 1925, the Russell family has remained squarely behind the wheel of Russell Transport Pty Ltd. Roy was first joined by Beryl, his wife, in laying the foundations for the success of the business, which their son Phil took over in 1971. This brought on the next level of growth and development, including the ownership of Metro-Lift Cranes, Caloundra General Transport, Bayley Industrial and Lytton Industrial.

Continuing in the tradition, three of Phil's children are now working in the business, and stand poised to oversee the next exciting chapter of the Russell Group of Companies history.

Founder of Russell Transport Pty Ltd

Roy Bayley Russell (1900-1987) - Founder

Roy Russell was born in Aubigny near Toowoomba, and was the eldest of five children. By 1909, the family had moved to Kelvin Grove in Brisbane, with his father working as a steam engine driver at the CSR Sugar refinery at New Farm.

By his 14th birthday, Roy had also entered employment, turning his hand to whatever work he could find to help support his family. His first big break came at the age of 25 however, when he was given the opportunity to become the carrier for the Commonwealth Oil Refinery in Brisbane.

RB Russell Carriers launched in 1925, with one motor truck carrying motor spirit in four gallon tins - including two packed in a timber box which had been shipped to Brisbane by steamer from Sydney. In 1930, Roy was invited to join the Master Carriers Association of Queensland, and was then able to use the title of ‘Master Carrier’.

Over the next 40 years, Roy and Beryl Russell grew their fleet to 20 trucks, extending operations to include carting wool, motor spirit in drums and bulk and general carrying.

Roy's son, Philip, then took over the business in 1970 at the age of 24, transforming Roy's local master carrier business into one of the largest private freight transport companies in Australia.
