Property Developments

As of May 2015, Caloundra General Transport is newly located at the Sunshine Coast Industrial Estate. The building contract was awarded to Spaceframe Buildings in September 2014, with the new facility at Bells Creek comprising 1.062 hectares; more than twice the amount of space of our existing Warana site.

The Caloundra General Transport Facility includes two warehouses specifically designed to provide food-grade warehousing and palletised storage solutions for short, medium and long-term use. With 2,614sqm of internal storage space, and an additional 1,088sqm of undercover vehicle loading space, this new facility also includes a sunken loading dock, wash bay and hard stand areas.

The opening of the facility was included as part of our 90th Year Celebrations, with a special open day organised for employees, their families and our customers.

Safety Developments

3PL Contract Manager for Russell Transport, Shane Gossner, was recently involved in developing a safety initiative to raise awareness about our drivers at the delivery sites of one of our major 3PL contracts. Our aim was to influence our customer (their customers) and their staff to be aware of our drivers while unloading our vehicles, especially where it involved interaction with forklifts and cranes.

After speaking with our drivers, we agreed to place a number of magnetic, interchangeable signs with key phrases on them around their vehicles. It was thought this was the most effective way to draw attention to the fact that a PERSON is delivering the goods, not just a vehicle. These messages can also be used to warn the general public when our team is in traffic.

Outcome : Our drivers have reported positive effects from using the signs, which act as discussion points with people on delivery sites whom they might never have spoken to previously.

While the concept may not revolutionise safety in transport, it has certainly opened up dialogue and the potential for better engagement between drivers, the delivery site and our customers. Most importantly, this very simple and cost-effective initiative may have saved a life.

Award-winning solution: This initiative has been recognised in a number of awards and was a case study at the recent WHS QLD Symposium in October 2012. In August 2014, we showcased this and other initiatives involving the retrofitting of hand brake alarms, outrigger leg alarms and Turntable connection guides at an Industry Open Day organised by WHS QLD for the Transport Industry in August 2014.
